Two forearms with small black lettering tattoos, the word 'here' on the upper arm and 'now' on the lower arm, in a car interior.

'here' and 'now' on two forearms

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown one above the other, each with a single word tattooed in small, dark serif lettering: 'here' on the upper arm and 'now' on the lower arm. The ink is fine and crisp with solid black letters, and the skin shows scattered freckles. The background is a dark car dashboard with controls and a hand resting at the lower left, with bright light across the top of the frame.

The sat-nav had given up somewhere after the third roundabout, so Nell read the road signs aloud in a flat voice, the way she did when she was trying not to cry. Hexham, eleven miles. Tomas kept both hands on the wheel at ten to two, as though the car might tip if he loosened his grip. Neither of them had said the word aunt since Newcastle.

The cardboard box sat wedged in the footwell between their feet, full of letters that Aunt Bea had kept in biscuit tins and never once answered on time. Tomas wanted to drive straight to the solicitor's office and get the keys over with. Nell wanted to stop at the bakery Bea always swore by, even though it had probably closed years ago. They argued about it past two villages until the argument ran out of road.

They pulled into a lay-by where a field of sheep stood with their backs to the wind. Nell opened the box and found, on top, a postcard addressed to them both in Bea's looping hand. It said only what she used to tell them whenever they bickered in the back seat as children: be here, now. Tomas read it twice, then made a noise that was half laugh and half something else.

Nell wound down her window. The sheep did not care what time it was or where anyone was going, and for once, neither did she. They sat with the engine off and the light coming warm across the windscreen until the bakery could wait.
