Two matching fine line tattoos reading soulsister with an arrow, one on a forearm and one on a wrist, shown as two hands are held together.

Matching soulsister arrow tattoos on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people's arms are shown with matching tattoos of the word soulsister in a thin, joined script, each with an arrow at one end. The linework is fine and even, in black ink with no shading, and the tattoos sit along the inner forearm and wrist. The soft, warm-toned background and close framing keep the focus on the tattoos and the clasped hands.

The reunion was in the function room above the Red Lion, the carpet still tacky with the ghost of a hundred lagers. Maggie found me by the raffle table and held out her arm without saying hello, the way she used to flash a forged note at the tuck shop.

We got them the summer after our GCSEs, in a back room in Margate where the artist kept a radio tuned to the shipping forecast. He wanted the arrows in fine liner, no shading, and we argued for an hour over which way they should point. Maggie said forwards. I said away. He finally shrugged and said an arrow points wherever you've been sent, and we both thought that was profound. Then I went to Leeds for a degree and she stayed to run her dad's chippy, and the arrow began to feel like a sign someone had fixed to the wrong post.

"Still pointing at the car park?" I asked. She laughed and tapped the joined letters. "It's a soulsister, not a satnav. It points at whoever's late." Then she dragged me onto the dancefloor for a song neither of us could remember the words to, and we sang the wrong ones anyway, loudly, until the DJ gave up and played it again.

On the motorway home I kept thinking about that little black arrow, and which way mine was pointing now. Maggie's text came through at a services near Doncaster: a photo of the chippy's closed sign, and underneath, "Still yours. Come and check."
