The bus into Margate had been a sauna since Ramsgate, and Dot Ferris had her forehead pressed to the window like a child on a school trip. Her brother Len sat beside her with a flask of tea gone lukewarm, complaining that the seat was too narrow for a man who had once been a fishmonger's second-best lifter. Dot wasn't listening. She was reading the signs out loud, one by one, the way she had when they were small and their dad drove them to the seaside with the windows down.

The cafe on the front was called Marsh's now, not Pearl's, and the woman behind the counter had a crooked fringe and a tattoo of a sunburst on the inside of her wrist, the lettering around it wobbling slightly in the steam. Dot ordered two teas and a bun she didn't want, just to watch the woman laugh at something Len said. The laugh was the first warm thing she had felt in three days of hospital corridors, and she held onto it.

Outside, the sky had finally cleared. Len stood at the railing with the flask under his arm and squinted up at the white glare as though it had personally offended him. Dot came and stood beside him, and for a while neither of them said anything. Then she tipped her head at the sun and sang the line under her breath, flat and certain, the way their mother used to when the washing needed bringing in. Len joined in on the second verse, and the gulls went off over the pier like they'd been told the good news.
