Moon, sun and tower in a circular line design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing enclosed in a circle, split into three panels. The left panel holds a crescent moon and dots resembling stars, the centre shows a tall tower with a keyhole-like motif and a small letter-like mark at the top, and the right panel has a sun with radiating rays. Wavy horizontal lines and arched shapes run along the lower part, all in uniform, even-weight linework on a white background.

The lift had stuck between the fourth and fifth floors again, so I sat on the bottom step with the master keys in my lap and listened to the tide drag the shingle below Harbour Court. Nineteen storeys, one working lift, and the working one was the only thing in the building anyone still believed in.

At ten past two the moon slid behind the cranes at the dock, and the flats went dark one by one, a grid of windows I could have named by heart. Flat 14 kept a lamp burning for a man who had gone in March. I had his key on the ring, though nobody had asked me to use it. Ruth in 22 had given it to me in a biscuit tin that morning, pressing it into my hand. 'Open it when you're ready, love. Not before.'
At five the sun came up flat and white over the water and found the glass on the east face, and I knew the lift would hold until the engineer came, which he wouldn't. So I climbed the stairs with the tin under my arm, past the stuck doors and the smell of other people's toast, and turned the key in the maintenance panel on the ground floor. The cables groaned somewhere above me. Then the doors opened, and Ruth was standing inside in her good coat, the lamp from 14 cradled in her hands, the wick already cold.
'Ready?' she said.
I took the lamp from her and carried it out to the shingle, and the waves came up to meet it.
