Crescent moon with blue shading and swirls
Mixed · Flash
A black ink line drawing of a crescent moon, with a thick outline on the outer edge and a thinner inner curve. Curling black scrollwork and small spirals sit against the left side of the moon. The crescent's inner edge is filled with soft blue shading, while the rest of the moon is left white on a plain white background.

Tonight the sky was clear and the moon was nothing but a paring above the col. He led the grey mule by its halter with the bell muffled in rag, because sound carried on the cold air and the river below had its own opinions about echoes. Behind him the boy Ivo kept counting the lamps of the village they had left, until there were none left to count.
At the cairn where the track forked, the roots of an old juniper had grown over a flat stone scratched with a spiral. Tomas stopped there every time to touch it. Ivo asked him why. Tomas said it was so the road would remember them. The boy didn't believe him, but he touched the stone too.
At the top, the crescent hung over the far valley, its inner curve washed pale blue by the light off the snowfield, its outer edge drawn hard against the black. Tomas took off his cap. The mule blew steam and walked on. Far below, a single window glowed in the village they had come from, and he knew his wife was sitting beside it, waiting for the bell.
