Colour tattoo of a grey-blue heron with pink shading, standing among reeds on water, on the lower leg.

Heron standing in reeds on a leg

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A stylised grey-blue heron stands on a clump of reeds above a patch of rippling water, with its long neck curved and beak pointed to the right. The bird is outlined in heavy black linework, with layered blue and grey bands on its wings and body and a soft pink wash along its breast. The reeds and water are drawn in black ink only, which frames the coloured bird against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorota had the ovens lit by half three, which left me the drainage ditch and the back yard to look at while the dough rested. The heron came every morning that October. It stood in the reeds where the ditch bent under the wall, grey as wet slate, and did nothing at all for an hour.

I tried to hurry it along. I rattled the proving racks, I dropped the bin lid, once I threw a heel of yesterday's tin loaf over the wall to see what it would do. It considered the crust the way Dorota considered my scoring, then turned its head and went back to the water.

The week the wholesale order doubled, I stopped complaining. We were up at two, shaping boules by torchlight with the radio murmuring about the trains, and the sky over the fen went from black to plum to pewter. The heron's neck would lift in a long, slow question, and its wings would open with a sound like a dropped sheet of paper.

Dorota retired in the spring. On her last morning she set the first tin of rye on the yard wall and stepped back inside. The heron came down, ate nothing, and stood beside the loaves a moment before lifting low over the water. When I took the tray out, the ditch was only rippling, and the bread was ready.
