Swallow on a key on the thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A realistic swallow with dark blue plumage and a rust-orange throat perches on an ornate key with a red gem, a bead chain hanging beneath it. Behind the bird are a large red mandala motif, a blue flower and dark green leaves. Bold outlines, smooth shading and saturated colour fill the design, which sits on the outer thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to the Brenda Rowe the same week the pilchards did, and by the time you had the engine coughing awake they had already claimed the wheelhouse rafters. Uncle Tom swore they flew all the way from Africa to find that one nail above the chart table. You told him swallows were stupid about nails. He laughed until he had to sit down on the fish boxes.

The key hung from the hook beside the chart table on a loop of bead chain. It opened the ice hold, the paraffin locker and the drawer where Tom kept his cards and the letter from the bank in Penzance. Every skipper before him had carried it in a waistcoat pocket, and every one had either gone down off the Longships or retired to a bungalow in Hayle, which was much the same thing. Tom said a key was for keeping things, and a man ought to keep something.

On the morning he handed the boat over to you, the harbour wall was red with the sun coming up behind the lighthouse and the gulls were screaming over the slipway. You stood at the rail with the key in your fist, waiting for him to say something useful. Instead the swallow lifted off the rafters, circled the wheelhouse twice and slipped out over the bow, as though it had only been waiting for the lines to come off.

You left the ice hold unlocked that night. You hung the key back on its beaded chain and left the wheelhouse door open, and when the boat rolled and the rafters creaked you did not once reach for the tide tables. In the morning there was a fresh mud cup on the nail, and you left it alone.
