Hexagon honeycomb pattern on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hexagon honeycomb tattoo covering the upper arm and shoulder area. The hexagons are drawn in fine outlines with grey and black shading, and they vary in size, with larger cells near the edge and smaller nested cells across the centre. The pattern fades into untattooed skin on the right, and the composition is angled so the arm fills most of the frame.

Tobiah Sallow had laid paving in Quennick for thirty-one years and had never once been asked to make a straight line. The Guild wanted cells. Every court, well-head and stair in the lower town had to be tiled in hexagons, because the old charter said the city had been founded by bees who chose the spot, and the Lord Warden would not hear a word against it.

His apprentice, Ines Harrow, with chalk always on her cuffs, noticed the flaw first. The large outer cells were true, but the cells at the centre of each courtyard kept shrinking, nesting smaller and smaller until they were too fine to see, and the mortar in them stayed grey long after the rest had weathered pale. "Something's underneath," she said. "Something's breathing through them."

They lifted the central slab of Tanners' Square at dusk, with lamps hooded so the Warden's watch would not notice. Beneath it was no cistern but a second city, cut in the same hexagons and going down and down, each chamber smaller than the last. In the smallest one a single pale comb hung from the ceiling, still warm, still humming.

Tobiah set the slab back before the bell. He told the Warden the paving was sound. That night he drew one more cell into his ledger, fine as a hair, and left the centre of it open.
