Pink isometric cube pattern on a black arm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tessellated pattern of isometric cubes sits in a band across the arm, drawn in fine pink and magenta lines over a dense black background. The surrounding areas are filled with solid black ink, and red flower motifs appear at the top and bottom edges of the frame. The photograph is taken straight on, with the pink linework creating a glowing, layered effect against the dark ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every night after the last tram, the pink lines came up through the wet slate of Sallow Street, and Mrs Gorse, who sold roasted chestnuts by the gasworks, said they were the old cube-stairs showing themselves again. Her grandmother had told her the city was built on a floor of boxes, each stacked on the next, and that if you counted the lit corners you would always come out one more than you started with.

A boy called Tobin Reed, who carried coal for the baths, decided he would count them. He went up the back of Dyers' Yard with a tin of chalk and a candle end, and at the first landing the lines turned under his boots like the edges of a sum. He counted nine. He stepped onto the tenth and found himself at the rail of a bridge he had crossed a hundred times, except the river beneath it ran uphill.

A woman in a grey coat stood at the far end of the bridge and asked him plainly what he wanted from the stairs. He said he wanted to reach the other side of the count. She told him the count had no other side, only the next box, and that the trick was to stop counting the moment the pink went out. He asked how he would know. She pointed at the chalk on his fingers, which had worn down to nothing.

He went home by the ordinary road. The next night the chestnut woman saw the lines rise again, faint as breath on a window, and she did not count them. Tobin was asleep under the coal sacks, and in his sleep he was still climbing, one corner at a time.
