Honeycomb blackwork torso piece
Blackwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a man's upper body from the neck to the waist, cropped below the chin, with a large black honeycomb design of pentagons and hexagons across the chest and abdomen. Around the navel the outlines break into fine dotwork that fades from dense black to open skin, creating a tunnel-like effect. The arms and shoulders are filled with solid black ink, and small words are tattooed on the neck and forearm, with a small red figure near the upper arm. The image is in black and grey, with a blurred street background.

Dear Marjorie, the big top came down on Tuesday in Swindon and we have been sleeping in the lorry since, so forgive the state of this paper. Ned has finally agreed to sell the calliope to a man in Leeds who collects fairground organs, and the money will cover the diesel to Carlisle if we are careful with the lights.

The thing you will want to hear about is the honeycomb tent. You remember we bought the mirror hall off the Lancaster fair in 1987 and Ned hung it in the back field where nobody could find it, and it has been the only thing in this show that never ran short of visitors. Pentagons on the walls, hexagons across the floor, and at the far end a round hole of dots that gets smaller the longer you look. Children lie down and count the cells. Ned says they are counting their way out.
Last night the little Pemberton girl walked in alone and did not come out for an hour. Her mother was frantic with the torch, and we found her sitting in the exact middle, where the dots thin to nothing, laughing at her own hand. She said the walls were breathing and that the bees had gone home. I have decided not to tell Ned, because he would only want to charge her for the hour.
Come to Carlisle if you can. Bring the good thread for the banner, and bring your reading glasses, because the dots are very small and I am afraid of them now. Yours, Frances.
