Hexagon outline with test lettering
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a hexagon sits on bare skin, with the words Test Tattoo on the upper line and Please Ignore on the lower line inside the shape. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the text is set in a simple typewriter-style font. The tattoo is centred in the frame and fills most of it, with the skin tone and lighting kept neutral.

Mind the step, love, and don't lean on the lift gate, it's still deciding which floor it likes. Sit down on the bench where the paint's peeling. Desmond Pike ran the caretaking at Harrow Point for thirty-one years, and he had one habit nobody on the estate could break. Every time the council sent round a new contractor, Desmond drew a shape on the nearest wall and told them it was a test.

He used a carpenter's pencil and a plastic hexagon he'd nicked from a school maths set, and he traced it fat and neat, six sides, no shading, because he said shading was for people with something to hide. Inside he wrote TEST, then PLEASE IGNORE underneath, in capitals so square you could have set a clock by them. The contractors read it, shrugged, and went off to fix the things that were actually broken. Desmond would stand in the bin store with his tea going cold and nod at the wall as if it had said something sensible.
Then came the summer the lobby was retiled. The new tiles were hexagons too, and the fitter laid the first row by the book. When he stood back to check it, he found a pencil outline already waiting in the corner, faint as a bruise, with the words inside. Desmond swore he hadn't been near the lobby with a pencil all week. Nobody believed him, and nobody could scrub the lines off, so the fitter laid the tiles around them, and the shape is still there under the mat by the post boxes.
So when the lift stops between eleven and twelve and somebody asks what's going on, you tell them the truth. It's only a test, and we're meant to ignore it.
