Small planet and rocket on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small ringed planet sits above a tiny rocket on the side of an ankle, with the foot resting on a red blanket. The linework is thin and uniform, with no shading and no fill, so the outlines read as clean black ink. The tattoos are small and set apart on the skin, with the rest of the leg and foot left bare around them.

At twenty to five the proving cabinet hummed, and Dilys Harrow stood with her forearms in cold water, counting dough balls under her breath the way her mother had taught her, in Welsh. The radio on the shelf murmured about frost over the Pennines. Nobody else was up on Cobb Street yet except the gulls.

Her grandson Owen had drawn the planet last summer, a ringed thing with a wobbly band, and pinned it above the scales. He was seven and certain that the rocket cutter in the drawer, the one with fins that never sheared clean, could send a loaf as far as the moon if the oven ran hot enough. She had let him believe it, mostly because she liked his face when the crust came out blistered and brown.
The first tray came out at quarter past five. She scored the tops with a razor, the planet first, a circle with a line through its middle, then a sharp nose and fins for the rocket on the second, which took three tries because the blade kept catching on the flour. Her hands were steadier than she expected. Outside, the streetlamp clicked off and the sky above the car park turned the colour of weak tea.
Owen's mum would collect him at seven and he would insist on carrying the rocket loaf himself, held up like a torch all the way down the hill. Dilys wrapped both loaves in brown paper, tucked the planet beside the rocket, and wrote SATURN and ROCKET on the tag in capitals, because a thing ought to be named before it leaves the warm.
