Top hat and bow tie on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo sits on the side of an ankle near the heel, showing a shaded top hat shape beside a smaller bow tie. The hat is filled with a soft grey gradient, and the bow tie uses simple dark outlines with light shading. The two motifs sit apart on plain skin against a dark leather surface, and the framing is close and slightly angled.

Mr Ambrose Tull had lost the rabbit in Hastings, the dove in Rye and most of his nerve somewhere between the two, so when the landlady of the Anchor offered to hold his top hat against a week's board, he did not argue. He only asked her to mind the crease in the crown, which he had spent three winters keeping flat by sleeping with it under the bolster.

She hung it on a brass hook behind the bar, beside the tide tables and a lifebelt nobody had tested since the war. Customers asked whose it was. She said it belonged to a man who would come back for it, which was true in the way the sea is true about the shingle. Ambrose, meanwhile, was living on pilchards and a borrowed bicycle, and the bow tie he had kept round his collar for luck was the only thing of his he had not sold.
He came back on the Thursday with a fortune in his coat that turned out to be two shillings and a dented sixpence. The hat was still on its hook. Beneath it, folded into a neat square and weighted with a pebble from the slipway, lay the bow tie, pressed flat and fresh-starched, with a note in the landlady's careful hand: Paid in full. The rabbit is in the cellar and has opinions.
Ambrose unfolded the tie, looked at the hat for a long moment, and then, because the lifebelt was watching him and there seemed no good reason to refuse a bargain, he put both on and walked out into the rain to find the rabbit.
