Hibiscus and spiral design on a foot

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

A bare foot viewed from above shows a hibiscus flower with a curling stem, outlined in brown and filled with purple glitter, plus a teal and green glittered spiral and small dotted accents. The linework is clean and fairly bold, and the flower is the dominant element, running from the top of the foot toward the ankle. The plain wooden deck behind the foot keeps the focus on the design, and red nail polish is visible on the toes.

The Marine Ballroom smells of Brylcreem, spilt lemonade and the sea that gets in under the doors every October, and you have stopped minding any of it. Tonight Harry Doyle's band is playing the same six numbers they played last summer, and you are standing by the cloakroom hatch with a tin of sequins that came off Vi's blue frock during the last foxtrot. Nobody has asked for them back.

The sailor came in the second week of the season, off a Liverpool boat that had been tied up at the breakwater for a fortnight. He had a hibiscus pressed flat inside a Woodbine packet, bruised purple at the edges, and he said a woman in Freetown had given it to him for luck. You did not believe him. You slid the flower into the ledger between the coat tickets anyway, and when he came back for a dance the following Friday he asked whether you had kept it.

By November the ballroom is shut for the winter and the groove on the old Columbia record has worn a tight curl near its centre, the one Harry says he will have repaired and never does. You take the record home under your coat. On the last night, with the shutters down and the tide coming over the slipway, you set the needle on that curl and let it turn, and the flower goes soft and brown in the ledger where you left it, keeping the same slow time as the sea.
