Pink and blue flowers with butterflies on a foot

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

A foot with a colour tattoo of pink five-petal flowers and clusters of blue flowers joined by curling green vines and leaves. Small purple and blue butterflies and loose pink petals drift toward the outer edge of the foot. The linework is clean with soft shading on the petals and leaves, and the design sweeps diagonally from the toes towards the ankle against a dark leather background.

Sit closer, you lot, the wind off the water gets into old bones and tells lies. I'll tell you about Mairi Gillies and the vine that came over the wall of the Scarra kirkyard the spring her husband went out with the herring boats and didn't come back in.

Nobody planted it. The pink flowers came first, five petals each, the colour of the inside of a shell, and they opened on the stones as if they had been told to. Then the blue ones bunched up beneath them, little clusters the bees went mad for. Mairi said the vine was counting. Every morning she'd come up the path with her basket and find another leaf turned toward the sea, and she'd say, aye, he's still working out the tide, give him time.

By August the vine had crossed the whole gable and started down the slope toward the harbour. The butterflies came with it, purple and blue, and they didn't stay in the garden like sensible butterflies. They went out over the water one after another, and the petals that dropped went with them, skidding off the wind like wee pink boats.

Then one evening in September a trawler came in low in the water, and a boy ran up the road shouting, and Mairi stood very still with the basket on her arm. She didn't look at the vine. She looked at the last butterfly lifting off the wall toward the sea, and she said, well, that's him sorted, and went down to the quay to meet the boat.
