Honesty script and ornate key on lower back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A finger points at a solid black tattoo of an ornate key with a scrolled, heart-like bow, and the word Honesty in cursive script runs along the shaft. The linework is bold and clean with flat black fill and no visible shading, set against warm skin tone. The tattoo sits on the lower back above a red lace waistband and blue denim.

No, don't reach for the gate yet. You'll want to hear the whole of it first, the way my grandmother told it to me when the snow was up to the sills. Up on the Corran pass there was a toll-house with a door that had no lock at all, only a keyhole cut in the oak in the shape of a heart, with an iron curl across the top. Travellers asked the keeper what it opened. She'd say, ask the key.

Dorrie Vane kept that house for forty winters. A carter came up one October with a lie in his cart, a crate of Lisbon wine he swore was vinegar, and he offered her a coin to let it through unchecked. She took the coin, set it in the cup of the iron, and turned the key slowly until the metal sang. Then she said the one word the key had taught her, which was only the true name of the thing, and the crate split at its seams and the wine ran red into the snow.
The carter wept and begged. She told him the key did not punish. It only made the truth easier to carry. Go down the mountain lighter, she said, and he did, though it was years before he could look at a lock without his hands shaking.
What the old keeper never told anyone was that the key had been her own, and that she had lost it the day she first lied to her mother about a broken bowl. She found it again in the snow the morning after, its bow frozen to the step. She carried it up here ever since, opening nothing, waiting for someone honest enough to ask for the gate.
