Pink bow on the lower back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A pink bow with a looped top, two trailing ribbon ends and a small knot at the centre is tattooed on bare lower back skin. The linework is bold and dark, with shading inside the ribbon folds that gives the bow some volume. The pink ink dominates the frame against the skin tone, and the hands holding the waistband of dark jeans sit below it.

The sports hall still smells of floor polish and burnt tea urns, and Denise Harker has already found you by the squash table, holding a paper plate as if it might be taken off her. 'You still owe me a ribbon,' she says, before hello. In Year Nine, during the Christmas play, you borrowed her pink satin bow to tie back the wig of the Snow Queen, and somewhere between the dinner hall and the bus you lost it, or pretended to.

You tell her you didn't lose it. It has been folded in the lining of an old satchel in your mum's loft for twenty-five years, the pink gone the colour of weak squash, one trailing end frayed to nothing. She laughs at that, a proper laugh that turns heads by the raffle table, and says she never wanted the bow back. She wanted to see whether you'd kept it.
So you walk out together into the drizzle, past the minibus with its wipers going and the teachers who used to be giants, to the car park under the orange light. You find the satchel in the boot of the Corsa and pull the bow free. She takes it, ties it into her hair with fingers that have never once been good at knots, and stands very still while you tell her it suits her.
The wind catches the trailing ends and lifts them off her shoulder, and the bow comes loose and skids across the wet tarmac toward the hall windows. You both run after it, shrieking like the Year Nine girls you were, and it snags for one second on a wing mirror before the gust takes it again. Denise gets there first and holds it up to the light, and the knot, which you tied so long ago, still holds.
