Honeycomb and floral bee design
Dotwork · Colour · Flash
A bee is shown from above with outstretched wings, its wings and heart-shaped thorax filled with honeycomb hexagons and flowers. The linework combines fine outlines with dense stippled shading, and the abdomen carries bands of hexagon motifs. The design is rendered in gold ink on black with white negative space behind the bee.

The bees came up the valley the morning the pumps failed, and Ada Wrenfield had to choose between the seed vault and the hives. She chose the hives. She carried the queen's box on her back, wrapped in wet cloth, the way her grandmother had told it, and she did not look back at the grey water climbing the terraces.

The old people said a bee carries the shape of every flower it has ever known, and folds those shapes into its wings so it will not forget them. Ada had always thought this was a thing to say to children. But on the ninth day the swarm lifted off the cloth and settled on the broken wall of a glasshouse, where the ferns had gone thin and pale, and it began to turn in the air above her, slow and exact, drawing a heart with its feet.
She followed them for three more days, up over the ridge where the clover still grew in patches the colour of old brass. Her hands were split from the rope and her boots had given up on the stones. On the last evening the bees went down into a hollow where a row of stepped gardens lay under the grass, and she saw that every bed was a hexagon, and every hexagon held a flower, and the whole hollow was the honeycomb from the queen's wing, laid out on the earth.
She opened the box in the low sun. The queen's comb came away in one piece, gold where the light touched it, and she set it down in the first bed. The swarm settled on it like a closing hand. By morning there were new cells, pale and waxed, and Ada stood among them with clover on her sleeves, counting.
