Bee with a crown in stippled ink
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A bee is drawn in side-on top view with its wings spread, antennae raised and legs bent, with a small open crown floating above its head. The body and legs are built up with fine stippling and dense dots, while the wings use thin outline linework with light veining. The design is in black ink only on a speckled off-white paper background, with the subject centred and fully visible.

The bee had been crowned by mistake, which was how Mrs Ivy Brannock liked to tell it at the Michaelmas fete, though nobody in Thornleigh had ever seen her in a hat or a jewel. The crown was a paper thing, cut from a cereal box by her grandson, and it had been pinned to the honey tent's canopy pole since June. When the judges came round for the wax-and-jar competition, they found the crown already sitting on the head of the largest bumblebee any of them had seen, a furry old queen that refused to leave the trestle table.

Nobody argued with the bee. You don't argue with a creature that has walked across three jars of set clover honey and left no sticky footprints. Mr Okonkwo from the parish council wanted it removed with a jam jar and a postcard, and Ivy told him to mind his own clogs. The bee lifted off, circled the marquee twice, and landed on the lip of the winning entry, a squat pot labelled in her spiky hand: Heather, Late Season, Very Sweet.
The prize was a tin of shortbread and a rosette. Ivy gave the rosette to the bee, pinned it to the crown with a hatpin, and watched it stagger off toward the orchard hedge looking, for all the world, like a bishop leaving a christening. She never did get the jar back. Some years later, when the bees went quiet across the valley, her grandson found the paper crown in a drawer, still stiff, still smelling faintly of smoke and sugar, and he put it on his own head to see if it fitted.
