Hooded figure and staff on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a large hooded, cloak-like figure with a dark outline and soft, blurred edges across the upper thigh. The interior has smoky blue and grey shading with some lighter highlights. A long, thin, twisted staff with a wrapped handle extends from the base of the figure down the leg towards the knee, and the photo is taken in a studio setting.

The dust had swallowed every tyre track by noon, so I followed the mile stones instead, squat grey things with their numbers worn down to nubs. Past the fourth one a figure stood in the road with its back to the sun, a cloak hanging from its shoulders in long ragged tongues. The colour of it was the blue you see at the bottom of a cold lake, and it moved although there was no wind to move it.

It leaned on a staff thin as a fishing rod and twisted like rope that had been soaked and dried too many times. I asked whether it wanted water. It turned its hood towards my mule for a long moment, then tipped the staff at the horizon, where the road bent behind a shelf of red rock and went out of sight. "Your sister went that way," it said, in a voice like a door left ajar in another room.
I had not told it about my sister. I had not told anyone in Sallow Wells, where her letter had come with no stamp and no return address. I pressed the water skin into its hands regardless, and its fingers were as warm as bread from an oven. When I looked up it had already stepped into the shadow of the rock.
I followed the road round the bend by dusk. The sand there held one pale line drawn from the place where the figure had stood, a thread lifted by the staff's slow tip, and it pointed the same way I was going.
