Fine line lettering tattoo in purple ink reading H.o.p.e; on the inner wrist, with a keyboard in the background.

Hope in fine line script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of the word Hope, written with spaced letters and a semicolon at the end, sits on the inner wrist. The thin, handwritten linework is in a single purplish-red ink with even lines and no shading. The photo is taken at close range with the palm turned upward, and a keyboard and desk are visible behind the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been taught that a full stop closed a sentence and a semicolon only leaned on the next one, so when Mr Cotterill slid the galley across the stone and tapped the end of the notice, she already knew what he would say. "Pull it out, Nell. The family wants a full stop, not a hedge."

She didn't pull it. The notice was for Edith Harrow, who had kept the Stroud Road ferry for thirty-one years and drowned the week the river came over the slipway. Her son had written the words in pencil on the back of a tide table, and the last line said H.o.p.e; with the letters spaced out the way the old chapel stones were cut. Nell had set each one by hand, the little brass rectangles clicking into the stick, and she had put the semicolon in because the son had underlined it twice.

She pulled the proof on the hand press that afternoon, with the ink thick and purplish-red because the shop had run out of black after the Christmas calendars. The letters printed clean. The semicolon sat at the end like a door left ajar. Mr Cotterill squinted at it over his spectacles, grunted, and said nothing more about it.

On Monday the son came in for the sheet. He read it standing at the counter, his thumb resting on the H, then folded it into his coat without a word. Nell only saw the red smudge after he had gone, a small clean print of a thumb on the first letter, and she decided to leave it there.
