Small arrow tattoo on inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small single-line arrow runs diagonally across the inner wrist, pointing up towards the hand. The linework is thin and even, with no shading. The ink looks pinkish and the surrounding skin is slightly red, suggesting a recent tattoo. The plain background is out of focus and the arrow sits near the lower centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week of August the Bramleys at Hollin Farm had gone heavy and sour-sweet, and Marjorie Tull still sent you up the long ladder before the sun cleared the hedge. You were nine that summer, and she told you the trees only gave their best to people who looked up first. Her knuckles were white on the rungs below you.

Every crate in the packing shed carried the same pencil mark, a single line with a barbed head, drawn by her late husband to show which way the picking should run. He had worked the orchard alone for thirty years and never once used a ruler. You copied the mark onto the back of your hand with a biro so you would not forget which way was up.

On the last Saturday the wasps came thick over the windfalls, and the men from the cider works arrived in a lorry with a tarpaulin folded on the tailboard. Marjorie refused to let them shake the top row. She stood at the foot of the old tree and pointed, and you followed her finger up through the leaves to one red fruit hanging alone against the pale sky.

You climbed slowly, the bark rough under your palms, and when you reached it the apple was already cool and heavy in your hand. You held it down to her like a prize. She laughed the way she did when the weather turned, and said that was the one she had been saving for you.
