Small arrow tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single arrow pointing upwards sits on the inner wrist, with the fingers of a clenched hand visible above it. The arrow is drawn in thin, dark black linework with a simple shaft and a three-pronged fletching at the base. The image is a close, straight-on shot against a beige carpet, with the ink in sharp focus and the rest of the skin softly lit.

Dear Tom, the damp got into the feathers again last night, so I've spent the morning steaming goose quills over the kettle like a madman. You'll laugh, but Mrs Okafor's boy came in at dawn asking for one arrow only, not a dozen, and he wouldn't say what it was for. Just one. Ash shaft, three feathers, the nock cut square.

I asked whether he wanted it barbed or plain, and he said plain, pointing straight up the way you'd point at the sky when you're showing a child where the swifts go. He paid in sixpences he'd clearly been saving in a tobacco tin. I fletched it right there on the bench while he watched my hands, three feathers set at the same slant, a thread of glue, and I thought of the rule Father drilled into us: a true arrow flies because its back end is patient.
Here's the odd part. Three days later he came back with the arrow in his fist, the shaft split a hand's width below the head, and said it had gone clean through the hedge at the bottom of the field and out the other side. He didn't want it mended. He wanted another exactly like it, and he wanted the first one wrapped in brown paper for the post.
I've posted it to you with this letter. Don't ask me why. I think the boy knows something about aim that I haven't learned yet. Write back and tell me whether the swifts are still nesting under your eaves. Your loving brother, Ned.
