A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The raven came in with the bread van at ten past four, which is how I knew Mrs Ostrowska had decided to go. Ravens don't land on the sills of the Harrowgate Ward for nothing. Sister Ines swore it was a starling that had slipped in through the loading bay, but starlings don't perch on the end of a drip stand and stare at you as if they're reading your notes. I told her I'd keep an eye on it. I've been on nights for eleven years, and I've learned that the job is mostly keeping eyes on things.

By half past four the corridor lights had dipped, the way they do when the boiler kicks in, and the porters' cat had gone under the linen trolley and stayed there. I did my round with the torch in my teeth. In the glass of the side room I saw a figure standing where no one was standing, horns black against the blind, a heavy cloak hanging from her shoulders as though the dark had been folded and put on. She didn't come in. She raised one hand with the thumb tucked, the way you'd signal a lift to stop, and she looked at the bed for a long moment. The raven shifted its weight on her shoulder and said nothing at all.

I should have been frightened. Instead I found myself counting her breaths against Mrs Ostrowska's, the way you'd check a monitor. Somewhere around five they matched, and the figure gave a small nod, as if satisfied with a handover, and the glass was only glass again.

Mrs Ostrowska lived to see the spring. The raven never came back, but the thumb-tucked shadow turned up at the end of every nights shift after that, always in the corner of a reflective window. I've stopped being surprised by her. I nod on the way to the kettle, and she nods back.
