Black and grey bird tattoo on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large bird with long, forked tail feathers and curled talons is tattooed on the outer lower leg, angled diagonally across the calf. The wings and body are rendered in bold black outlines with grey shading that suggests feather texture. Partial tattoos are visible at the edges of the frame against a white sheet.

Nell Harrow had the lamp in one hand and the ticket rack in the other when the bird dropped out of the glass roof above platform four. It was black as a coal scuttle, its tail split into two long blades, and it hung for a moment over the rails before tipping into the wind off the goods yard.

Her uncle Ambrose had worked the signal box at the far end of the line for forty years. He said swallows nested under the canopy every summer and nobody ever thanked them for it. This one built nothing. It kept to the slate roofs of the sidings, dipping after pigeons and stray crisp packets, and each evening it came down onto the gantry above the signal wires, talons closed round the iron like a cold fist round a coin.

The stationmaster wanted the gantry clear before the autumn timetable. Two men came up the ladders with a wire brush and a bucket of grey paint, and the bird was gone by the Thursday. Nell didn't see it leave. She only noticed that the wires looked bare without it, the way a room looks after a clock has stopped.

On the last Friday of September she found a single feather on the platform, grey at the root, black to the tip, the fork as clean as a pair of shears. She took it to the ticket office and pushed it into the frame of the window with a drawing pin. Every morning since, she has checked the gantry before she unlocks the booking hall. It has been empty every morning, and every morning she checks again anyway.
