Colour tattoo of Maleficent with her dragon form, a raven and a red rose, placed across a person's upper back.

Maleficent dragon and rose on a back

Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the villainess Maleficent in a cartoon style, with her purple and black dragon form rearing above her shoulder. A black raven sits at her side, and a red rose with green leaves sits in the lower part of the design. The linework is bold and dark, with the colour filled in and softened by blue, purple, yellow and green washes and splashes behind the figures.

The raven arrived first, as it always did, perching on the lych gate and judging the monks' psalms through the gaps in the wall. Brother Osric said it was a bad sign. She carried a rose under a glass bell, its petals the red of a pricked thumb, and she asked for one night's shelter. Abbot Hildred refused her at the threshold. She laughed, a sound like gravel poured down a well, and the lanterns along the cloister guttered blue. Behind her, over the wall, something vast unfolded itself from the sky, a dragon the colour of a bruised plum, its wings catching the moon and its eyes lit yellow as candle flame. The bell in the tower began to ring without a rope.

Nobody slept that night. In the morning the sorceress was gone, the dragon with her, and the raven was the only one left, perched beside a single rose on the chapter house step. The glass bell lay in the frost, cracked clean across. She had left a note in a looping green hand: Water it, lay brother, and it will never die. Do not let the abbot near it. I obeyed her, which is the only sin I have confessed twice.

Some mornings I still hear the bell ring without a rope, and I walk out to the step with a jug. The rose is always open, always red, and the raven always watches me from the wall as if it knows how long I have been keeping its mistress's promise.
