Skull and rose on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A skull with a small cross above its brow dominates the forearm, with thin branches and leaves spreading out from behind it. A rose drawn in fine lines sits at the lower end of the design, near the wrist. The work uses black ink only, combining loose linework with stippled dotwork shading across the bone and petals.

You reach the chapel of Harrowgate Keep just as the bell in the broken tower gives its one dull note, and the ivy has already claimed the south wall. Brother Anselm waits at the gate with a lantern and a face like wet paper. He says the old lord was laid in the vault on Tuesday with a cross cut into the stone above his brow, because the mason insisted, and nobody has managed to scrub it off since.

He leads you through the nave, where roots have split the flagstones and thin branches push through the arrow slits, grasping and leafing over the rubble. The lord's tomb lies open. Inside, the skull is turned toward the door, jaw hanging as though caught mid-laugh, and someone has tucked a single rose into the gap where the teeth used to be. Its petals are drawn in fine lines, still beaded with dew when you touch them.
Anselm says the roses come every spring, though nobody plants them. He has burned the bushes twice and they were back by morning, climbing the wall as if they had somewhere to be. You ask what a dead man would want with a garden in his grave. Anselm only shrugs and points at the stone, where the cross has been cut again overnight, fresh as chalk.
You kneel and ease the rose from the skull's jaw. The branches on the wall quiver and draw back like a hand lifting from a sleeper's shoulder. By dawn the bell is silent, the roses have gone to seed, and the cross on the old lord's brow has been rubbed clean by a hand that was not Anselm's.
