Black and grey realism full sleeve tattoo on an upper arm and forearm, showing a Jack Skellington style face, a spiral-eyed figure, a skull and a jack-o'-lantern.

Halloween character full sleeve in black and grey

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full arm sleeve shown in three views, with a Jack Skellington style face at the shoulder, a spiral-eyed figure, a grinning mask-like face and a skull stacked down the arm. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep greys that give the faces a sculpted, three-dimensional look. The sleeve is in black and grey only, and the person's face is not shown.

Dear Tom,

The hall at Corrimuir is worse than you remembered. Mrs Gallagher has given up on the east wing entirely, and the rain comes straight through the roof above the grand stair, so I have had the masks carried down into the cellar where at least the walls keep their own dry air. There are eleven of them now. Your great-uncle carved the first in 1931, a pale face with a crooked grin, and the rest followed like a family that never stopped arguing. You will laugh when you see the one with spiral eyes. It looks at you as though it has just remembered a joke.

The stair itself is the trouble. Every October the masks climb out of their crates and stack themselves on the landing, one above another, like the figures on a totem pole that somebody forgot to paint over. On Tuesday I found the pumpkin at the bottom with its candle guttering and its carved mouth black with soot, and the grinning mask balanced on its head. I swept it all back into the cellar and locked the door, and in the morning the key was on the step, warm, as if someone had been turning it all night.

I have decided to leave the pumpkin lit on the threshold tonight, out of courtesy. Mrs Gallagher thinks I am mad. Come up on the train if you can. Bring a torch and your good boots, and tell me honestly whether you think the skull on the third crate is smiling or merely waiting.

Yours in the damp, Margaret
