Skull and daisy full sleeve with eye and cube pattern
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A three-panel photograph of a full sleeve tattoo running from the shoulder to the wrist. A large skull with a daisy-like flower across its top sits on the upper arm, with a realistic eye and a faint face on the forearm. The shading is smooth and detailed in black and grey, and the lower forearm is filled with a geometric three-dimensional cube pattern.

"Look at the bottom step," he said, tapping the paper. "Is it up or down?"
I looked until my eyes watered. Up, I said. Then down. Then the whole thing turned over like a coin and sat on the page the other way.
He had come to Porthgwidden the winter the lifeboat station closed, with a tin trunk of drawings and a skull he kept in a biscuit tin, real and bleached, with a dead daisy pressed into one eye socket. Nobody asked where it came from. The fishermen said he had found it on the Scilly run, and the old women said it had been his wife's, and he let them say what they liked.
On the last day of the herring season he gave me the drawing he had finished at last. The stairs ran down into the harbour wall, and at the top of them, where a shoulder would be, sat the skull with its flower. Beneath the flower was an eye, wide open, looking straight out of the page. "It only works from the front," he said, "so you'll have to stand where I tell you." I stood where he told me, and the stairs began to climb out of the paper, and I went up them without once deciding which way was down.
