Horse head with bridle on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A horse head in grey and black shading wears a bridle with pearl beading and a round orange rosette. Orange and red flowers with black scrollwork and swirling petals frame the design. The tattoo wraps down the forearm, with bold black outlines and smooth colour fills against the skin.

The pearls were already threaded through the bridle when the mare came up the lane, and nobody at Hollin Court could say who had strung them. You were the one who fed her at six, so you were the one who found her standing at the gate that morning, head high, the rosette catching the first light like a coin somebody had dropped in the grass.

The garden behind the stable wall had been dahlias and poppies since the old squire's wife planted it, and nothing else was allowed to bloom there. You knew every bed by its colour. So when the mare lowered her face over the wall and the poppies turned their heads after her, you did not tell Mr Ashby. You simply pulled the bridle off in the cold, as you would for any horse, and waited for her to be ordinary again.
She was not ordinary. The pearls rolled off the leather and across the cobbles one by one, and where each one stopped, a small orange flower pushed up through the frost. By noon the beds were full of them. Mr Ashby stood on the path with his hat in his hands and counted nineteen new blooms before he gave up counting. The mare nosed the last pearl out of the straw, lipped it once, and carried it back to her stall.
That evening you found the rosette lying on the stable step, warm as a hand, and you held it until the metal went cold. You never put it back on her. You kept it in your apron pocket through the winter, and every spring, when the first poppy opened by the wall, you felt it knock against your hip like a small, patient bell.
