Planchette, hand and spiders on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo on the forearm shows a planchette shaped pointer with a crescent moon, a spider and a yellow rose on its surface, with a green scalloped border. Below it, a hand with red painted nails wears a jewelled ring, and several small black spiders crawl over the wrist towards a red cuff with a spider web. Bold black outlines, flat fills and shading on the hand give it a classic flash look, set against a shiny metallic surface.

Sit down, you're letting the heat in, though the door's been shut since noon. You want the one about the board? Everybody wants the board. Fine. Her name was Dora Quill and she drove a Hudson with one good headlamp across the Mojave every spring, selling readings from the back seat to ranchers' widows and salesmen who'd lost their nerve. She kept a planchette in a tin box lined with red felt, a heart-shaped pointer of polished walnut with a crescent moon painted on it and a yellow rose pressed flat under the varnish so it would never wilt in the dust.

One night outside Baker, a lorry driver called Eli Strand asked her to find his brother, who'd walked off the highway in 1952 and never come back. Dora laid her fingers on the walnut, her rings catching the lamplight, and the pointer began to move. Not slide, crawl, the way something with eight legs might push a thing across the felt. It stopped on the moon and would not be shifted, no matter how hard Eli leaned on the table.
Eli said that was no answer. Dora said the board never lied, it only had bad manners. Then she lifted her hand from the walnut and there were little black spiders walking over her wrist, down towards the red cuff of her sleeve, spinning a web across the crook of her elbow as neat as lace. Eli's brother, the board had said, was waiting patiently in a web strung between two dead mesquites, and he didn't mind the wait.
Eli drove on without his brother. Dora kept her ring on and her nails red, and every spring the spiders come down the road to see who's asking. Mind the cuff, love. Nobody's ever got their hand back from the board.
