Fine line black tattoo of a hot air balloon with the script words I refuse to sink on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Hot air balloon and script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black hot air balloon with vertical stripes hangs beneath a small rope, with the handwritten script words I refuse to sink wrapping around it on the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, with simple solid lines in the balloon's stripes and no shading. The photograph is taken from above against a reddish-brown pavement, with the tattoo sitting centrally in the frame.

Dear Tom, the council letter will reach you before this does, so you'll know the Hendry balloon came down in the stubble behind the sugar beet with nobody hurt. I'm writing because you asked what Dad said when they lifted him out of the basket, and I've been putting it off all week.

He didn't say sorry and he didn't blame the wind. He sat on a sack of feed with his cap in his lap and asked the lad from the council to fetch the fine brush from the van, because the lettering along the rim had washed grey in the drizzle and he wasn't having it look like that at the Ely show. Then he went over every letter of I refuse to sink, slow and careful, the way he did the year you were eight and the paint kept running.

Mum always said he'd rather go down with the ship than admit he'd misread the weather. I thought that was the whole of him until I watched him dip the brush. He kept glancing at the sky, and at the furrows, and at the little rope hanging loose beneath the stripes, and I understood he was not talking to us at all.

Anyway, the wind's dropped now and the crew are folding the envelope on the grass. He says the next flight is Saturday, weather permitting, and that you should come and hold the rope this time. Bring your gloves. The ground's cold and the dew soaks through by six.

Love, Jean
