Small cross tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, thin black cross sits on the inner wrist, angled slightly and drawn with delicate single-line strokes. The hand is raised towards the top right, with red nail polish and a cream lace sleeve at the bottom left against a plain beige wall. The tattoo is the only point of detail, and the soft, even lighting keeps the fine linework clearly visible.

The ewes had been lambing since before light, and by the time you reached the top field the snow had crusted hard enough to bear your weight, which was the only kind thing the morning had offered. Mrs Hartley's dog trotted ahead, nose down, stopping at the dry-stone wall where the drift came up to the coping.

Someone had pushed a cross into the snow there. Two lengths of ash, lashed with baler twine and set at a slant, the way Eli always set them, as if he had been leaning into the wind when he drove them in. You knew his hand before you knew the cross. He had been dead since Michaelmas, and the barn had gone quiet without his cough, but the twine still had the knot he favoured, a double loop he said would hold a lamb or a lie.

You crouched and brushed the powder away with your glove. Beneath the cross lay a stillborn lamb wrapped in an old feed sack, and tucked against it was a biscuit tin with his initials scratched into the lid. Inside, under a fold of oilcloth, was a page torn from the lambing book in pencil: Keep the gate shut. The north corner of the wall is down again. Tell the boy to mend it before the thaw. You had never been given anything by Eli except instructions, and here he had left you the one thing you had not asked for, which was the job of remembering him.
