Infinity symbol wrist tattoo
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black infinity symbol is drawn on the inner wrist, with a thin continuous line running around the wrist like a bracelet. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The photograph is shot against soft white fabric, with the raised hand and wrist filling the frame and a slim ring visible on one finger.

Dear Imre, the splice held. Forty-one hours on the tether at the dock ring, and I kept the line taut the whole time with nothing but my hands and a bad temper. Mother would have laughed at me. She always said the only honest knot is the one you can undo.

They have given me the old continuous line now, the one that runs round the spine from the hub to the ballast drum and back again. Nobody living has seen where it starts. The engineers say it was laid before the first hundred families came aboard, and that it has never once been cut, only mended, patch over patch, so every stretch of it is a different age. I walk it each shift with a tally card and a roll of fibre. When I reach a seam where new cable meets old, I stop and run my thumb along both sides until I can't tell which is which.
Last week I found a figure eight pressed into the sheath near the drum, two loops crossing, worked so small it would not catch on a sleeve. Nobody on the roster admits to it. I scratched a copy into the inside of my locker door that night so I wouldn't forget how it sat, and I have been turning it over ever since. I think it means the line goes on past the place where anyone is still counting.
I don't need you to agree. Come up for the spring turn if they let you off the farm ring, and bring the good scissors. We'll ride the loop together and cut nothing. Yours, Tove.
