Hot air balloon over tower and boat on back
Dotwork · Back · Mixed · Photo
A hot air balloon with geometric patterns and a small pink heart sits above a tower with decorative circles and a boat below it, with stippled clouds around the design. The linework is dark and detailed, with dotwork shading in the clouds and background, and pink, green and black ink. The design fills the centre of the upper back and is shown from behind, with the head cropped at the top of the frame.

The stationmaster's daughter, Ilse, was the only one at Coldharbour Junction who could read the wind off the clock tower. Her father swore it was in her blood, the way the tide was in the harbour boats. Every morning she climbed the iron stairs to the four-faced clock, held up a wet finger, and said the same thing: the balloon would go up at noon, or it would not go up at all.

The balloon belonged to a man called Mr Pell, who sold platform tickets for a penny and lied about where he had got them. It was striped in green and rust, with a small heart sewn into the middle of its belly. Nobody had ever seen it fly. The porters said it was held down by the anchor chain of a painted boat that had come in on the last tide with no crew aboard, and that the chain had never once been let go.
On the day the rail bridge washed out, Ilse climbed the tower with a box of matches and a sack of coal dust. She did not say what she meant to do. She lit the brazier under the clock and waited for the heat to fill the canvas, and the whole village came out onto the cobbles to watch the clouds fold up around the basket like sheep settling for the night.
The balloon rose a foot, then another, and the chain came tight and sang. Ilse cut it with her father's shears. The boat slid back under the water without a sound, the clock struck twelve, and the balloon drifted out over the sea with its small pink heart still glowing. By evening the whole valley agreed it was the most sensible thing Ilse had ever done.
