Hot air balloon with mandala pattern drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn design of a hot air balloon, with its envelope filled with intricate mandala-style patterns and scalloped, floral motifs. The lower section narrows into ropes and a small open-faced geometric basket. The fine black linework is shaded with dense hatching and dots, with no colour, and the sketch is photographed at an angle on white paper with black pens nearby.

The balloon came down over Hobb's Field the morning after the frost fair, which was the first thing anybody noticed, because nothing had come down over Hobb's Field since the war. It was not a proper balloon, Mrs Ackroyd said, not with that lace all over it. It looked more like a doily someone had stitched in ink and then sent up with a bit of hope in it. Ruth Pemberton, who kept the bakery and had opinions about everything, walked out with a loaf under her arm to see for herself.

The basket was no bigger than a lantern and shaped like a small cage of diamonds, and inside it sat a man with ink on his cuffs and a bag of pens at his feet. He had been drawing the same balloon, he said, for thirty years, and every time he finished it the thing lifted off the paper and wandered. Each curl of the mandala was a street he had walked. Each scallop was a window where someone had once left a light on for him. He had lost his way somewhere over the flat country and only found it again when the paper started to cool.
Ruth gave him the loaf. He gave her a pen, the fine one with the smallest nib, and said she should draw her own way home. She did, on the back of a receipt, a single dot at a time. By the time the sun was up the field was empty, the frost had gone to dew, and a faint lacework of pencil lines ran along the hedge where the balloon had been.
