Ornate hot air balloon ink drawing

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a hot air balloon with a patterned envelope and a woven basket, set on a cream sketchbook page. The envelope is filled with leaves, petals, scallops and cross-hatching, while the basket has a fine diamond lattice and a decorative band. Two mandala-style flowers sit to the right, drawn in the same dark ink.

Dessa held the mouth of the envelope open with her knees while Tomas fed the burner, and the fabric breathed in and out like something asleep. Nobody on the ground crew had said it aloud, but the thing was too beautiful for a field behind the gasworks at midnight. Its panels were patterned from crown to skirt with leaves and scalloped petals, every one stitched by hand over three winters at the kitchen table, and the lamps of the estate threw them into shadow.

The basket was older than the balloon. Its woven lattice had come from her father's net loft in Hull, the diamonds still faintly smelling of tar, and the band around its middle carried the same little rosettes as the cloth her grandmother had spread over the piano. Dessa had sewn two mandalas onto the flaps as a joke, then felt foolish, then left them there. Nobody flies a thing like this for money.

When the ropes let go they rose without a sound but the roar of the flame, past the chimney pots and the tram wires, over a city that looked from above like a spilt jar of coins. The cathedral clock showed twenty to one. Beneath them the river kept its own slow pace, and the wind, which had promised to stay still, leaned them west.

They did not come down where the map said. The envelope caught the sodium light as they drifted over the ring road, and for one long minute every leaf she had stitched gleamed gold, so the streets below seemed to be wrapped in her thread. Tomas laughed and cut the burner. Dessa watched the roofs come up to meet them and let the basket settle.
