Hot sauce bottle with banners on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A red hot sauce bottle with a green cap sits at the centre, wrapped by a pink banner reading PUT IT ON EVERYTHING, with two darker ribbon banners behind it. A faint grey rooster is shaded in the background on both sides. The bottle has bold black outlines and smooth colour shading, and the design fills the upper arm.

The royal kitchens of Brightmarrow had run dry three days before the Feast of Thistlewick, and so I was sent down the south road at dawn with a purse, a bad horse and the king's own seal pressed into my glove. The rooster on our crest had been crowing for hot sauce since the spring, and His Majesty had decreed that every dish in the realm should carry the red elixir. The decree was painted on a pink banner above the castle gate, and the clerks had argued about its spelling for a month.

At Gallows Ford I found Mother Ysolde stirring a cauldron that smelled of vinegar and pepper. She did not look up. She simply pointed at a row of green-capped bottles along her windowsill and said the king could have one, but only if he promised to stop putting it on the sacred pudding at coronations. I told her I could not promise such a thing on behalf of a man who had once tried to season a swan. She laughed until a rooster on her roof flapped twice and fell off.
I rode back with four bottles wrapped in my cloak. The feast was already loud when I reached the hall, and the king, bright-eyed and shining, lifted the first bottle as though it were a sword. He splashed it over the pudding, the swan, the bishop's boots and at last the herald's own bread. The court sneezed in unison. Outside, the weathervane spun in a hot wind, and I wrote in my ledger: one journey, four bottles, no pudding saved.
