Rose wreath with quote on thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo on the outer thigh shows the phrase EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL AND NOTHING HURT in black serif lettering, with small arrows above and below the text. The words sit inside an open oval frame of thin black linework, bordered by red roses with yellow highlights and green leaves. Soft grey shading sits beside the frame and the lettering, and the image is mainly red, green and skin tone with black linework.

Dear Thessa, the roses came up from Paphos on the third ship, and the factor tried to charge me for the thorns. I told him I was buying them for a wreath, not a quarrel, and he laughed and knocked a third off the price just to be rid of me.

The frame is finished. You will remember the oval of willow cane Father bent over the hearth the winter before he sailed. I wound it with ivy and myrtle, then set the roses low on the left and the right, where a guest's hand would fall when reaching for a cup. Old Lysandra came up the steps to watch. She said the frame was too tight for the words, so I told her the words were the part that mattered, and she stopped arguing and handed me a sprig of rue from her own basket.
The lettering was her request. She had it painted in black on the pale plaster, and she wanted the line to read from the top down, slowly, like a wave going out. I added two little arrows, one above and one below, so that anyone who came to it would know where to start and where to stop. Lysandra said people always read grief the wrong way round.
Come home before the Ides and bring the good chalk. The roses are still a little wet at the petals, and the whole workshop smells like the inside of a honey jar. Tell Mother the frame is straight. I measured it twice with the string, exactly as she taught us, and it did not move.
