Motorcycle rider with speed lines
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A helmeted rider leans over a motorcycle, drawn with bold black outlines and heavy shading. Streaks of speed lines run across the design, with a dotted, angular star shape at the top right. The image is a close view of the arm with a plain, lightly blurred studio background.

The chalk star on the pit board was the only bright thing at Hollin Ring that Sunday, and Ferris had painted it himself, dotted at the points the way his father taught him to mark a true line. By the third lap the grass had gone the colour of wet slate. I stood by the petrol drum with my hands in my coat and watched the Hallam come round the back straight low enough to skim its own shadow.

Nobody in the stands had seen a man take the banked corner flat out in those conditions. Ferris leaned until his knee nearly touched the tarmac, and the machine went on drawing its streaks across the wet like a pencil that refused to lift. Somebody behind me said the bike would fold. I said nothing, because I had tightened every bolt on it myself and knew the frame would hold longer than his nerve.
On the last lap the lightning-shaped flag on the gantry snapped sideways in a gust, and for a moment the whole field seemed to tilt towards it. Ferris didn't brake. He came off the bank with the engine screaming and crossed the line a length clear, then rolled to a stop beside the star and pulled off his helmet, grinning like a boy who'd stolen the church bell.
Later he asked me what the speed had looked like from the grass. I told him it looked like rain going sideways, and that a man could only ever chase it with his head down. He laughed and handed me the chalk, and I drew one more star on the board, a little crooked, because the chalk was the only thing in the shed that never asked how fast he'd gone.
