Howling wolf and full moon flash
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a wolf howling up towards a large, stippled full moon, with a cluster of flowers and leaves at the lower right. The wolf's fur is built from fine hatched lines, while the moon's craters and the shading use dense dots. The phrase "You're a werewolf and I'm a full moon" curves around the top and bottom of the design in a traditional lettering style.

I worked nights there for eleven years under a sodium lamp that turned every face the colour of weak tea, so I knew the regulars by their documents before I knew them by sight.

Tomas Rennick came through every month when the moon was full, always with an empty trailer and a bundle of sealed letters for a village on the far side. The first time, he slid his passport under the glass and said, 'You're a werewolf, and I'm a full moon.' I told him it was the worst chat-up line I'd heard in a decade. He said it wasn't chat. It was a diagnosis, and he'd been waiting years for someone to confirm it.
Last month the moon hung so low over the barrier that the sky looked pricked all over, like dust on an old window. Rennick didn't come. A relief driver pushed an envelope through the slot instead, in Rennick's cramped hand, with my name on the front and nothing else.
I read it at the end of the shift. It held one line: 'Step outside and look up.' I did. The moon sat full above the fence, and somewhere past it a long note rose and held, and before I had decided to answer it, I was howling back under my breath at the empty road.
