The man in lane seven had a hatbox the size of a cake tin and the look of someone who expected me to laugh. I asked him to lift the lid. Inside was a top hat, black silk gone soft at the brim, with a card tucked into the band that read 10/6. Beneath it sat a pocket watch stopped at a quarter past something, and a tin of roses pressed flat between sheets of wax paper.

Declare everything in your luggage, I said, and he went down his list with one finger, like a boy reading a menu. A candle. A brass key that opened nothing he could name. Two paper tags, one reading Drink me and one reading Eat me, knotted to the handles of a cardboard box. The box held a sponge cake still warm from a kitchen in Canterbury, with a single icing rose on top. Is it food? I asked. It's a commission, he said. For a woman who wants to hear that she's right to be late for everything.

Regulations, I told him, required a sample of any foodstuff over the border. He looked at the Eat me tag for a long moment, then broke off a slice with his fingers and ate it in three bites. He said it was the best thing he'd tasted all week, which worried me more than the hat did. I stamped his papers, weighed the watch, and let the cake through on the grounds that nobody had ever been detained for being too sweet.

He put the hat on at the barrier, tipped it at me, and walked out into the grey morning humming a tune about a tea party that had never quite ended.
