Dreamcatcher with rose and feathers design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed pen drawing on cream paper of a dreamcatcher with a web of circles and a beaded hoop. A rose with leaves sits at the top left of the hoop, and two feathers, a heart pendant and a small bow hang from strings of beads. The linework is fine and even, with hatching on the feathers and no colour or shading.

The gulls have got into the drying shed again, so the mending will have to wait until Tuesday, when Mr Ferris comes over on the boat with the new netting. I am writing this on the back of the tide tables because the good paper went out with the last parcel. Mam, if you read this to Dora, tell her the feathers she sent came across with only one bent quill.

The old women on the far side still hang a hoop over the cot, strung with horsehair and beads, so the bad dreams get caught in the web and the good ones slide down the strings to the sleeper. Mrs Tully made one for the baby with a rose stitched at the top, because she says roses keep a hoop from fraying. I did not believe her until the winter the wind took the shutter off the back room and the hoop was the only thing in the house still turning.

The heart charm on the lowest string was Dora's, from the fair in Kinsale, and the little bow Mrs Tully tied on the longer feather is the last of the ribbon from your wedding. I have hung it over my own bed. Last night I lay under it and counted the beads until the lamp on the Head had gone round four times, and I slept better than I have since the boat went out.

Come in the summer and bring the big hoop down from the attic. There is a boy on the pier who asks after you every Sunday, and I have told him you are sea-wise and will not be caught by any nonsense. Send me the day of the crossing and I will meet the ferry myself.
