Howling wolf and wolf silhouette on lower back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers bare skin on the lower back. A wolf with its head raised in a howl dominates the right side, and a smaller wolf silhouette stands on dark rocks at the left beneath a crescent moon and mountain shapes. The linework is fine and the shading is soft and grey, with some darker areas in the rocks, and the skin's glossy surface shows a slight sheen.

The recorder clicks on at the third sunset, and you hear the call before you see anything: a long note climbing off the basalt shelf, thin as wire. The field log says the pack on Tharsis Reach went silent during the seed-drought, so you set down the cold tea, key the coordinates into the old rover's slate, and climb into your suit. Beyond the dome, the terminator is a bruised line across the ridge, and the crescent of the planet hangs above it like a clipped thumbnail.

The pack was supposed to be extinct. Seventy years of gene-banking, a hundred and four pups released, and the last recorded sighting is marked absent in Dr Okonedo's handwriting. You climb the switchbacks with the drone on a tether, the air thin enough to taste of pennies. At the top, a single grey shape stands on a spur of black rock, head tipped back, singing at a sky the colour of old slate. Below it the valley lies flat and empty, the mountains throwing their shadows across the dust.
You don't answer. Your grandmother told you that replying to a wolf is how you lose it to the hills. Instead you switch the drone to silent, lie flat on the cold stone, and wait. The wolf stops mid-note. It looks down the slope toward you, then toward the crescent light, and for a long breath neither of you moves.
When it finally turns and trots into the dark, the drone's counter blinks: one heat signature, then a second beside it. You write the number in the field book, underline it twice, and leave the tether coiled on the rock where the rover will find it at dawn. The valley keeps its secret one more night, and so do you.
