Howling wolf and mountain scene

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The main subject is a wolf in profile with its head raised and muzzle pointed upward as if howling, drawn with bold outlines and soft grey shading. Beside it, a smaller wolf stands on a dark rocky outcrop under a moon framed by mountain peaks and clouds. The piece is entirely in black and grey ink and fills most of the frame on a large area of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had been pulling bindweed from the bean trench since teatime, and the light was going out of the valley the way it always did, from the bottom up. Above the back wall the fells had already turned black. Her father had painted them on the potting shed in 1962, peaks like folded paper and a moon he touched up every spring because the damp kept lifting it off.

The lurcher, Sable, lifted her head from the path and stared past the gate. Ruth knew that look. Nothing came down off those fells now except sheep and the odd walker with a map. Still, she set down her trowel, wiped her hands on her apron, and walked to the far end of the plot where the old gatepost stood. Her father had carved a small wolf into its side the summer she turned nine. She had been told it was a dog, and she had never believed it.

She tipped her head back. The moon rose over the Hendry ridge, pale as a dinner plate. Sable sat, nose pointed at the sky, and the sound that came out of Ruth was thin and out of practice, more creak than cry. Then, from somewhere beneath the scree, a second voice answered, longer and lower than any dog's. Ruth stood very still with her hands in her apron pocket, and for once she did not reach for her phone to explain it away.
