Howling wolf merged with a profile portrait
Black and grey · Flash
A howling wolf with its jaw open and teeth visible sits above the head and shoulder of a figure shown in side profile, whose long hair falls down the page. The linework is fine and scratchy, with white strokes lifting out of dense black areas to model the fur and hair. The image is monochrome against a flat mid-grey background, with the composition running from the wolf's muzzle at the top down through the hair to the bottom edge.

Dear Mags,

The last northbound left Carlisle at twenty past eleven and I am the only soul on Platform Two apart from a porter who has been asleep on a bench since the signal failed. You asked me to write from wherever I ended up, so here I am, under a lamp that buzzes like a wasp in a jar.
Something came down off the fell road while we waited. I heard it before I saw it, a long note that climbed and then broke over the rails, and I thought of Dad's dog the winter he left, sitting on the step with his head thrown back. Nobody else on the platform looked up. The porter just pulled his cap lower and said it was only the sheep dogs from Brampton yard, which is a lie, because there are no sheep dogs in Brampton yard and there never were.
Here is the part I can't tell anyone else. The howl came again and the hair on the back of my neck lifted, and I saw a grey shape at the end of the platform, muzzle up, and beside it a woman with her hair unbound to the knees, sitting very still, listening the way you listen to a train you know is not coming. She didn't turn. The wind took her hair and laid it out along the sleepers like black ribbon.
When the lamp went out I was alone. The timetable on the wall still says the 06:14 is on time. I am going to wait for it, and I will post this at Penrith, because I want you to know I was not afraid.
Love, Jen
