Four grey feathers in ink wash
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows four feathers drawn in a soft, shaded style, each with a pale quill tip and darker barbs. They are arranged in a loose S-shaped curve down the page against a plain white background. The work uses grey wash and fine dark marks for texture, with no colour and no body part visible.

Tove found the feathers in the seed vault's inventory drawer on the third day of the dark shift, when the lights were dimmed to amber and the ventilation hummed a half-tone flat. They lay on a sheet of pressed paper, four of them, each tipped with a pale band like frost on a fence rail. Nobody aboard Greywater had signed them out since the last hatching, and the station had not kept a bird in forty years.

The log entry was in her predecessor's cramped hand: Moulted, not plucked. Keep them in the order they fell. Tove turned the sheet to the light. The feathers had been arranged in a loose S, the top one slanting left, the lowest pointing back up toward the others, as if the bird had been falling and changed its mind halfway down. She could not tell whether they had come from one wing or from four birds, or which had dropped first.
She thought about the two finches in the hatchery, Lenka and the older one nobody had bothered to name, and how their feathers never survived the scrubbers. She fetched a magnifier and a jar of the lacquer used on seed labels, then stopped with the lid half turned. Some things were kept precisely because they could not be improved by touching them.
She photographed the arrangement without lifting a single barb and sent the image up to the surface archive with the note still arranged. The reply came before the lights came up. Leave them as they are. Someone will ask where they went, and it helps to be able to say they stayed put. Tove slid the sheet back into the drawer, pale tips upward, and went to see about the finches.
