Howling wolf silhouette in a moon circle
Black and grey · Flash
A white wolf silhouette with its head raised and jaws open to howl is set against a solid black circle. Pine trees along the left edge are cut out in black, forming a simple, bold silhouette. The image uses only solid black and white, with no shading or fine linework, and the wolf fills the right side of the circle.

The winter the river froze to the bottom, Marta Halloran's father sent her up the Pinebrake track with a lantern, a loaf wrapped in cloth, and instructions not to answer anything that called her by name. The tracks of the old timber road were drifted over, so she followed the black shapes of the firs, tall and ragged along the ridge, the way her grandmother had taught her to read a forest by its edges.

At the cutting where the trees stopped, a wolf stood on the rock with its head thrown back. It was not hunting. Its jaws were open and its throat was pale in the moonlight, and the sound it made was not a cry for help but a long, level question, the kind a man asks when he has been shouting into a well for hours and wants to know if anything below is still breathing.
Marta set the lantern down. She had been told not to answer, but nobody had said anything about the wolf. So she opened her mouth and gave back the only thing she had, which was a note her mother used to hum over the washing, flat and tuneless and entirely hers.
The wolf dropped its head. Down the ridge, three lights came on in the cottages of Lower Brake, one after another, as though the village had been waiting to be asked. Her father was standing in the lane with a shovel when she came down, and he did not ask her where she had been. He only handed her the lantern, looked up at the moon, and said that some things came back when they were called properly.
