Tribal orca leaping through waves
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black drawing of a killer whale leaping upward, with its head and body filled with flowing swirled linework and white cut-out details. The tail and fins curl into stylised waves and splashes at the base. Shown in pure black on white with no greys or colour, so it reads as a bold silhouette-based design.

Pass me that flask, and keep your voice down, the harbour master's lamp is still burning up there. Aye, that's the one. You've been pestering me since the last ferry, so listen. The black water off Coldharbour Steps never keeps still, not in February, and not with the gulls gone quiet like that.

Three winters back, a boy called Tam Rennie took his uncle's skiff out after the mackerel, and the swell came over the breakwater faster than any of them reckoned. The lifeboat was ashore for repairs. Men stood on the wet stones with their torches, shouting his name into the wind, and nobody could see past the second buoy.
Then the orca came. Not a shadow, a real beast, black as the tar on the cobbles, with its belly catching the streetlamps. It rose out of the troughs as if it had been waiting for its cue, its back curled with swirls like the foam on a rough sea, and it threw itself clean over the wall and came down with a crack that rattled the glass in the fishmonger's. When the spray settled, the skiff was righted and Tam was clinging to its gunwale, and the whale was already turning out past the light.
They say the curls it left are still there, cut into the harbour wall where the stone never quite dries. Go and look tomorrow, if you're brave. And if you ever hear a splash like a door slammed in the dark, don't go to the edge to see. Just thank the water and walk home.
