Howling wolf silhouette in watercolour wash

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A stylised wolf head is shown in profile with its muzzle raised and mouth open in a howl. The figure is a solid white silhouette cut from a blue, teal and green watercolour wash, with spiky, flame-like fur along the neck and chest. The design sits centred on a textured off-white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flock has been counted twice and still the number is wrong, one ewe short, and you know which direction she has gone before you have finished cursing. Your grandmother's knife hangs at your hip, its bone handle worn pale where her thumb used to rest. The ridge above the spring is grey with frost, and the wolves have been talking to each other all week from the far side of the water.

You follow the ewe's split hoofprints up through the alder scrub, past the cairn where the old people leave bread for the dead, and you do not think about the bread until you pass it. The wind turns. Below, the river runs the colour of a bruise going green at the edges, slate and reed and a thin light that is almost yellow. You have never liked this stretch of water. Your father said the river remembers what it has drowned.

At the top of the ridge the grey wolf is sitting in the open, not hiding, a shape cut clean from the sky. Its throat lifts. It sings one long note that goes through your chest like a cold blade, and then the others answer from the trees below, the whole valley opening its mouth. You understand, too late, that the ewe was never lost. She was led.

You lift your own face to the sky and make a sound you did not know you had. The wolf stops and turns its head, and for a moment there are two voices on one ridge, and neither of you can tell which of you was called.
